Categories lost during Cha-Ching 2.0 Database upgrade
I downloaded the latest Cha-Ching 2.9b99 release 405 (with updated interface). BUT ALL OF MY CATEGORIES ARE GONE!!! Every single transactions shows as "uncategorized"!! I am horrified because this is going to set me back for days in terms of my workflow.

Inappropriate?I am working on this issue. Fear not, a backup of your database gets created during the launch process for the latest beta of Cha-Ching 2.0.
Once I figure out what causes the lost categories you will be able to restore the backup and then relaunch Cha-Ching and everything should be categorized again.
I haven't nailed down what is causing this issue but I will post here as soon as it is resolved.

Inappropriate?Out of interest, where are the backups created because I can't find them, only the iPhone backups.
-
Inappropriate? The Cha_Ching.2cddb file is copied and renamed to Cha_Ching~.2ccdb whenever a database upgrade happens.
We are actually working on enhancing this further and keeping daily auto-backups for 2.0 final as opposed to just one backup each time your database gets upgraded for a new version.
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?Ah, hadn't realised that was a backup made on every upgrade, thought it was a backup made every launch.
I take it that it is pointless adding transactions currently as we'd need to revert to the backup to get our categories back, or will you be simply copying the categories across?
Cheers -
Inappropriate?Hope you'll solve this problem soon!
A good security measure for Cha-Ching is to put a symlink (similar to an alias, created with the command "ln -s [your cha-ching cddb fil] [a folder in your dropbox]" in the terminal) of the database in your dropbox, Dropbox will then keep an offsite backup of your database with 30 days history on any change. If you don't know dropbox you should! Get it here: https://www.getdropbox.com/referrals/...
I’m very cautious

Inappropriate?Ok, so pretty much, I can't do ANYTHING at this point because: 1. If I enter any new transactions to Cha-ching, they are going to be gone when reverted to the old database. 2. I can't use the previous version of Cha-Ching because it expired.
So, I have lots of important transactions happening this week, and it looks like I'm screwed. Good way to screw your royal customers there, midnight apps. I'm turning to another solution and never looking back.
Bye. -
Inappropriate?Yeah any news on this MA?
-
Inappropriate?I spent about an hour entering transactions yesterday before it came to my attention that the categories were missing. I'm getting less and less confident about relying on Cha-Ching.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Still no word on whether we can enter new transactions in the mean time and keep them when restoring the old ones with categories... should we assume the worst?
-
Inappropriate? To be honest I can't say for sure wether you will need to revert to the backup or not.
It depends on if the categories are still listed in your database but showing in the application as uncategorized or if they have actually been stripped from the database during the upgrade.
The main trouble is that I can't duplicate this issue. Without actually seeing a database that has this issue I am not sure how to fix the problem.
It is definitely frustrating because I really don't want to leave you guys hanging.
I am working on it. -
I can send you my DB if you wish?
Interestingly enough, there is a "Uncategorized" category in the custom categories that wasn't there before. I wonder if the transactions have been moved to that category rather than actually being Uncategorized? -
That would be extremely helpful... Can you email me at support@midnightapps.com? -
Just sending now -
Like REBELinBLUE, I too see a new "Uncategorized" custom category that I did not create. -
Inappropriate?Did you get it, because Mail has it both in my draft and sent folder >_<
-
Inappropriate? All of my entries are now uncategorized since upgrading after trial period ended. working with snow leopard. anyone else with this problem? solutions?
This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
everything is uncategorized??!!.

Inappropriate?REBELinBLUE we received it :) You (and several others) have been most helpful and I was able to finally figure out what was causing the issue :)
Working on getting a new build posted soon.

Inappropriate?Fantastic :)
Out of interest what was the problem, since I noticed I didn't have to restore the backup?
Now we just need Apple to get with it ;) -
Inappropriate?works fine
-
Inappropriate?I don't know how you did it so not only are my old categories back, but I didn't lose my work since the new update. Good job.
I’m happy
